Forest Day 5 |
| – | Forest Day 5 will take place in Durban, South Africa, on 4 December 2011, on the sidelines of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC. The Day will seek to inform the UNFCCC global agenda and forest stakeholders on ways to implement an international REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks) funding mechanism that produces social and environmental benefits, above and beyond avoided emissions. The event will have a particular focus on Africa, looking at the tropical forests of the Congo Basin and elsewhere, and the continent's wide expanses of dry forest areas. |

“Climate-Smart Agriculture: Opportunities and Challenges for African Farmers” |

CCAFS will, together with the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and Food, Agriculture and National Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), organise a side event that will discuss Opportunities and Challenges for African Farmers. As per a decision by the African Union, there will be a dedicated discussion and exhibition area called the Africa Pavilion. The Pavilion will provide a forum for discourses and debates that set the context for Africa-relevant climate change issues and themes in the larger framework of sustainable development in Africa. Among the invited speakers are the Minister of Agriculture of Tanzania, representatives from African farmers’ organisations (SACAU, EAFF, ROPPA), researchers and negotiators. |

High Level Event: Climate-Smart Agriculture – Africa: A Call to Action |

As a follow-up to the African CSA Ministerial Conference in September global leaders will launch early action on climate-smart agriculture on December 7, from 14:00 – 15:30 at a high-level meeting. This high level event is organised by South Africa, the African Union and the World Bank and will feature, as confirmed, Kofi Annan, Robert Zoellick, Jean Ping, Mary Robinson, Erik Solheim (possibly Jens Stoltenberg, Prime Minister of Norway), Izabella Teixeira (Minister of Environment, Brazil) and Prime Minister Meles (TBC). |
